Again, the peak rises just above the lower layer of clouds. The 20,320-foot mountain is the tallest in North America. Measured from its base to its peak McKinley rises 18,000 feet from the ground (since it starts at an elevation of 2,000 feet). In comparison, the world's highest mountain, Everest, only rises 11,000 feet from its base on the Tibetan Plateau.
